The NPI is issued by CMS through NPPES and is a federal identifier, but the data you enter is what every health plan in Miami-Dade and Broward will later compare against your Florida Department of Health license and your CAQH profile. Many providers in Hialeah and Miramar practice at more than one location or under more than one group, and choosing the right practice location and taxonomy at this step avoids credentialing rejections later. We also see practitioners who trained abroad and enter their name in a different order than on their Florida license, which is one of the most common reasons an NPI record does not match.

What is an NPI number and who needs one in Florida?

The National Provider Identifier is the federal number CMS issues through NPPES to identify a healthcare provider in billing and HIPAA transactions. Any practitioner who bills insurance or is listed on claims in Florida needs an individual NPI, and a practice entity that bills in its own name needs an organization NPI.

Do I need an NPI if I am only a solo practitioner?

If you are a healthcare provider who bills or is identified in HIPAA transactions, you need an individual Type 1 NPI. If you also operate through an entity that bills in its own name, that entity needs a Type 2 NPI as well.

How does an NPI number application in Miami work with Overthink?

We confirm which NPI type you need, set up or recover the CMS Identity & Access account, select the taxonomy code that matches your Florida license and specialty, enter the practice and mailing addresses and submit the application in NPPES. What should I have ready to apply?

Your Florida professional license number, Social Security number, date of birth, practice and mailing addresses, and your specialty so we can select the correct taxonomy code. For an organization NPI we also need the entity's FEIN and Sunbiz details.

My NPI record has an old address. Can Overthink fix it?

Do I need an NPI before credentialing with health plans?

Yes, every plan asks for it, and the name, address and taxonomy on the NPI record must match your license and CAQH data exactly. Getting the record right at this step avoids the most common reason provider credentialing stalls in Miami-Dade and Broward.

Can you apply for my NPI in Spanish and remotely?

Yes. The NPPES application is in English, but our bilingual team walks you through it in Spanish, by appointment at our Palmetto Bay or Sunrise office or remotely. You can book an appointment in either language.
