Serving Miami and all of South Florida

Two offices, one team, and clients from Homestead to Fort Lauderdale.

The FEIN is issued by the IRS, not by the State of Florida, and a Miami business normally needs it right after the Sunbiz filing: banks in Miami-Dade and Broward ask for it to open an account, payroll providers require it and the Florida Department of Revenue uses it to link your sales tax and reemployment tax accounts. Because so many South Florida owners are foreign-born, one of the most common questions we hear is how a person without a Social Security number obtains a FEIN for a Florida entity. We explain the route that applies to your situation and prepare the application accordingly.

Visits are by appointment. Most of the work can also be done remotely.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about this service. For anything else, call us or ask the assistant.

What is the difference between a FEIN and an EIN?

They are the same number. FEIN stands for federal employer identification number and EIN is the short form the IRS uses. Either way it is the tax identification number of your business, separate from your personal number.

How does the EIN number application in Miami work with Overthink?

We confirm your entity details against your Sunbiz record, identify the responsible party, prepare the IRS application and review the confirmation for errors. You leave with the number and an explanation of where you will need it: bank, payroll and Florida Department of Revenue accounts. If you have not formed the entity yet, we start there and register your new business first.

Can I get an EIN without a Social Security number?

In many cases yes, but the application path is different and the IRS has specific requirements for the responsible party. Bring your passport, your entity documents and any ITIN you may have, and we will review which route fits your case.

What documents do I need to apply for an EIN in Florida?

Your Sunbiz filing or entity documents, the legal name and address of the business, the identification of the responsible party and the date you started or plan to start operating. If the entity has several owners, bring the list with their roles.

How much does it cost and how long does it take to get an EIN?

What the EIN number application in Miami involves depends on whether the responsible party has a Social Security number, on the entity type and on how the IRS is processing applications at the time. We explain the path that applies to you and what to expect for your case in the first conversation, before anything is submitted.

Do I need a new EIN if I change my business?

Some changes require a new number, such as converting from a sole proprietorship to a corporation, and others only require updating the IRS record. We review what changed in your Sunbiz filing and tell you which one applies before anything is submitted.

I lost my EIN confirmation letter. Can you help me get a copy?

Yes. We help you request the replacement letter from the IRS and check that the entity name and address on it are still correct. Banks in Miami-Dade and Broward and payroll providers usually ask for that letter, so it is worth keeping a digital copy in your corporate records.

Is the EIN also what I need for payroll and Florida sales tax?

It is the starting point. Payroll requires the EIN plus a Florida reemployment tax account, and sales tax requires a separate registration with the Florida Department of Revenue. We open those accounts through our payroll services and Florida sales tax pages once the EIN is issued.
